Vincent Killowry, artist and philatelist, studied at Cluain Mhuire College of Art, Galway, and also has a background in both engineering and flying. He has spent most of his 25 year career in the west of Ireland.

Killowry is well known in the Philatelic (stamp collection) circle as the artist responsible for an impressive 46 special edition An Post stamps. “Painting for An Post has been a great honour down the years and this year it is even more exciting to produce two stamps for An Post”.
Vincent’s stamps this year, his 45th and 46th, are in commemoration of the Volvo Ocean Race, the biggest and most exciting sporting event in Europe in 2009. Between the beauty of the artwork and the excitement the race will surely bring, this is undoubtedly a must-see exhibition.
Killowry’s contemporary approach to painting alternates between figurative, landscape, seascape, transport and equestrian. Regardless of genre, all of his work is executed with equal measure and intensity. His work exudes atmosphere combined with a technical accuracy gleaned from his interest in the engineering aspect of his subjects. As an artist who specializes in painting the great Machines of land and air, Killowry has now harnessed the power of Mother Nature... the powerful energy of the sea.

Mary-Ann Clarke spent her formative years in Hampstead. She inherits her talents from three generations of artists. Her mother and grandmother taught her to love nature, and being an only child she spent a lot of time drawing and painting the finds of rambles on Hampstead Heath.

Mary-Ann attended Barnet College and after qualifying at Reigate College of Art, she went on to teach Art .At this time she settled on a farm in Hertfordshire .While bringing up three daughters, she returned to her art. Mary-Ann became a pupil of the eminent artist, William Mason, A.R.C.A. who inspired the evocative style of work for which she is known today.

This style concentrates on the quality of light and its effect on nature. Mary-Ann uses soft focus and amorphous impressions to create a harmonious balance of expressive images which conjure up an indistinct yet highly nostalgic atmosphere. Pastel provides an ideal medium for expressing the effect of soft light as it shines through her landscapes. She likes to work with soft pastel and colour

She is primarily influenced by Monet and Turner. Mary-Ann’s work is considered to be highly collectable for its ability to evoke half forgotten memories to the viewer.

There is no need to limit yourself to buying paintings, as photography, sculpture and prints are some of the many other options available, and may better suit a smaller budget.

Another thing to be aware of is the rising incidence of art fraud, which has caught many unsuspecting buyers unaware. Because the internet is used so widely nowadays, it has become easy for scams to spread; such as where a poster instead of the original and/or a forgery is sold as a “limited edition” (sometimes even along with an equally fake “Certificate of Authenticity”). The best rule of thumb is to avoid buying art over the Internet as a beginner to the art market, stick to what you can see and touch with your own eyes. In this vein, good places to buy from include art galleries, the artist themselves, or reputable auction houses.

Once you have found the type of art you like and a place to buy it from, what we would most importantly advise is this: Buy something you know you like, that you could enjoy looking at every day. It is very possible that your purchase may take years to increase significantly in value, so treat buying an artwork as you would treat buying a home; as something you will live with for a significant amount of time. That way even when the market fluctuates (as will almost always happen) you will still get satisfaction from your investment.

A good way to determine whether you are choosing an artwork that will hold, or ideally, increase in value, is to look at the career of the artist so far. If they are being exhibited frequently over a number of years, has an agent, or is regularly receiving publicity in the form of good reviews, articles etc.; these are good indicators that the artist in question has a good chance of wider success and financial investment.

Once you have invested in your artwork, keep in mind that the work will need to be kept in top condition to retain all of its value in the event of it being sold again. Ask before you collect your artwork how it should be cared for. If you are considering selling your piece soon, have it appraised by a qualified professional. Once you have an idea of what your art is worth, you can establish an asking price. Remember; always sell to or through a reputable source. As you establish contacts through your art collecting, so will you get a good idea where your art should be sold. Auction houses are good options, although keep in mind that the auction house will retain a commission for selling your piece. Private collectors and art dealers are also options but finding one suitable will require more research on your part.

Opening April 18th, artist Ursula Klinger’s exhibition “Shoes in The Cities,” will transport the viewer with their glamourous scenes and heels any fashionista would die for. Madonna once remarked that shoes are as good as sex, and "last longer." Klinger’s paintings go one step further by telling a story along the way.

Ursula Klinger herself is an embodiment of the lifestyle she depicts in her paintings. A German artist, she has travelled extensively to America, New Zealand, Spain, and most recently Malta. Despite all this she has found the time to settle down here in Ireland and make her home here. She has shown her paintings in various exhibitions in Ireland and Germany. Not just about fashion, her work is also concerned with the problems of visual communication; the showing of what is unsayable about the human condition; its fragility, its potential and ambiguity. Philip Gray’s solo show had its opening last Saturday in the Bold Art Gallery in Galway. Philip did a live painting demonstration with pastel that afternoon. Everybody in the gallery gave a bit of their touch on it and Philip did a painting with all the colours and forms that people had drawn.

In 2008 Philip made a voyage of discovery to the Bahamas in search of a new pallet to express the tonal variations at the heart of the world’s oceans. Here he created a vibrant series of images featuring the tropical shades of a sea and sky bathed in dazzling sunlight.

One of his painting created under those water infested by sharks is actually on display in bold art gallery.

Philip will be giving one of his legendary live painting demonstrations, offering a fascinating opportunity to see how he creates his award winning seascapes.

Since the beginning of time the sea has held pride of place in our collective cultural imagination;
The work of Philip Gray makes an eloquent and powerful addition to this prestigious artistic heritage.

Taking the beauty and drama of the elements as his starting point, he provides us with the opportunity to escape the chaos of day to day life and appreciate the wonder of the natural world as interpreted by a master of the genre.

Into the west is a series of paintings which depict the wild and untamed landscape of Ireland’s western coastline.

Then using his past experience as a naval diver and his unique expertise and versatility as an artist, he undertook an extraordinary project and visited the ocean bed to create his initial studies at 60 ft under the sea. With scuba and sixty minutes bottom time, using pallet knife and fingers, Philip created three oils on canvas over a series of dives.

“My figures appear in an urban landscape of which I am part. I try to use colour and form to express the emotion of my figures. I have recently developed this to include portraiture which I find exhilarating. I prefer a nightmare world full of shadows where danger and savagery is always close to hand. My own doubts and fears and hopes are expressed on the faces that appear in the bars and backrooms in my work”.

As colour and form are such central elements of Graham’s work the still-life works very well for him. It's potential for simplicity and invention and its deep roots in tradition bring Graham back to his student studies of Cezanne and Picasso.

He is a prolific worker, spending up to 15 hours in his studio every day. Knuttel has now emerged as a celebrated painter with a rapidly growing international reputation. His lifestyle could be considered eccentric and in recent years he has become reclusive and attaches great importance to his private life. Graham also holds the accolade of being voted worst-dressed man in Ireland 2006!

Upcoming Exhibition - Hazel Hendy

Self confessed extrovert Hazel Anne Hendy has led a very varied life. Originally from Co. Kildare, she moved to New York at the age of eighteen and spent ten years there before settling in Kilkenny. While in Kilkenny, Hazel began working with the Barnstorm Theatre Company, where her escapades including dressing as a clown. She was also involved with the People in Need Telethon, of which she became the co-ordinator.

In 2000, she and her partner Paul moved to Galway with their eight children. She became PRO for Galway City during the Special Olympics, when the city hosted the Great Britain team. She describes the experience as ‘amazing’, saying that the Special Olympics will ‘always have a soft spot in people’s hearts’.

When the Special Olympics finished, Hazel decided to set up the Bold Art Gallery - which has gone from strength to strength ever since. The gallery prides itself on being bold and daring in the work it showcases and Hazel describes herself as someone ‘who thinks outside the box more than most’.

New Arrival - Pat Walsh

Born in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Pat Walsh has come and gone from painting, including one lapse of 28 years. However his interest always returned, and since his last return to painting in 1980, he has studied under such distinguished names as Thomas Ryan P.R.H.A., Kenneth Webb, Susan Webb, Pam Skerritt, Chris Jones and Dick Free.

Apart from exhibiting in many group shows, Pat’s work is in private collections in many parts of the world as well as the public collection of Premier Periclase Ltd. He has sold extensively to the United States.

Pat has devoted his time mainly to painting since his retirement in 1989, but also spends time writing, and has had one story collection published to date, and a number of other work in completion. Married to Dorothy, they have five children, one girl and four boys. Pat's other pastimes include gundog training and country walks.

Philip Gray was born in Cork and lived here until he turned six, then his parents, Albert and Wendy decided to move to Dublin for a few years. Without doubt his passion for the sea can be traced back to his childhood in Cork. He inherited his creative and adventurous spirit from his mother’s side of the family, a lineage that very fittingly nurtured both sailors and artists. Among his siblings there is a graphic designer and an interior designer, so creativity is certainly in the blood.

Artist of the Month - Paul James

Self taught artist Paul James is a remarkable and fascinating man. He is a gifted wildlife, animal and landscape artist and a wonderful pianist. It would seem that if he has set his heart on learning something he goes for it big time.

In fact should you make reference to his talents Paul will argue that his creative abilities are not down to talent but more about his attitude and application. Paul demonstrates a dogged determinedness to succeed in everything he does; in particular he admits a desire for recognition and respect as an artist.

He was born and grew up in Leicestershire. His artistic and musical abilities became apparent from a relatively early age and with the support and encouragement of his parents he is essentially self-taught. He did go to Art College at the insistence of his teachers to study graphic design, but being something of a rebel he did not wish to conform to the course requirements and preferred to spend time painting classic cars at the local garage, and neighbors pet cats and dogs, so his studies were not concluded.

He went on to develop a career in music, playing both organ and piano in a range of pubs, clubs and cocktail bars. However, it was not quite the rock star lifestyle that he had envisaged and he returned to his first love of art and began painting professionally in 1986. The haunting beauty of the nearby Charnwood Forest greatly influenced the atmospheric landscape and animal paintings for which Paul is renowned today.

Gavin Collins was born in Cape Town, South Africa on May 30th 1971, the son of a farmer and artist. Living on farms all his life, Gavin showed no interest in academic subjects but spent his days working with his hands, drawing and painting. When his talents for art became apparent at the age of 14, his parents supported him and at 16 allowed him to leave school and attend the Ruth Prowse School of art.

Gavin is without doubt a highly versatile artist having mastered all styles in oil painting. In the past 4 years the demand for Gavin’s work has grown immensely. With international and local collectors snapping up his work as soon as it is completed, this has made Gavin one of South Africa’s best selling artists. Gavin’s creativity has grown along with his passion for painting, recently adding abstract to his already versatile subject matter. In recent years, Gavin has also been using his creative talents in other areas of business and now has 2 of his patented inventions on the worldwide market.

So what do you need to know before becoming one of the many art investors out there? Here are a few tips to help you make informed decisions and wise investments.

First of all, it is a good idea to take an interest in art in general before spending money on it, just as with any other type of investment. While it is not necessary to have a degree in art, knowledge of the basics can be a great help to you, as it gives a chance to familiarize yourself with styles that you particularly like, as well as detailing the different types of art it is possible to buy. There is no need to limit yourself to buying paintings, as photography, sculpture and prints are some of the many other options available, and may better suit a smaller budget.

Another thing to be aware of is the rising incidence of art fraud, which has caught many unsuspecting buyers unaware. Because the internet is used so widely nowadays, it has become easy for scams to spread; such as where a poster instead of the original and/or a forgery is sold as a “limited edition” (sometimes even along with an equally fake “Certificate of Authenticity”). The best rule of thumb is to avoid buying art over the Internet as a beginner to the art market, stick to what you can see and touch with your own eyes. In this vein, good places to buy from include art galleries, the artist themselves, or reputable auction houses.

Once you have found the type of art you like and a place to buy it from, what we would most importantly advise is this: Buy something you know you like, that you could enjoy looking at every day. It is very possible that your purchase may take years to increase significantly in value, so treat buying an artwork as you would treat buying a home; as something you will live with for a significant amount of time. That way even when the market fluctuates (as will almost always happen) you will still get satisfaction from your investment.

A good way to determine whether you are choosing an artwork that will hold, or ideally, increase in value, is to look at the career of the artist so far. If they are being exhibited frequently over a number of years, has an agent, or is regularly receiving publicity in the form of good reviews, articles etc.; these are good indicators that the artist in question has a good chance of wider success and financial investment.

Once you have invested in your artwork, keep in mind that the work will need to be kept in top condition to retain all of its value in the event of it being sold again. Ask before you collect your artwork how it should be cared for. If you are considering selling your piece soon, have it appraised by a qualified professional. Once you have an idea of what your art is worth, you can establish an asking price. Remember; always sell to or through a reputable source. As you establish contacts through your art collecting, so will you get a good idea where your art should be sold. Auction houses are good options, although keep in mind that the auction house will retain a commission for selling your piece. Private collectors and art dealers are also options but finding one suitable will require more research on your part.

Artist of the Month - Conor McGuire

Conor McGuire was born in the west of Ireland and has chosen to live there as his influences are taken from the local rural landscape and townscape. His technique can vary from realism to abstract depending on the subject, but he finds his artistic home to be in an impressionistic impasto technique. He loves the quality and light in the west of Ireland and the shifting transience it brings to the subject matter. He likes subjects that are timeless and speak to the viewer without requiring them to be political or analytical. To his viewer Conor hopes they get some sense of the quirky essence that makes the west of Ireland life so special…..a sense of the timelessness of the place, its friendliness and beauty.

The type of medium he uses depends on the type of painting he is working on; for landscape and townscape he uses oils and then acrylics for abstract work. He favors lush textured brush strokes, allowing the paint to convey and suggest form and detail. He does however `go in` and add detail with a sable brush but tries to keep it light and unlabored.

Conor avoids being overtly political or attempting social commentary but he hopes to convey a sense of joy of being alive and living a full life in a unique and beautiful place.

Graffitti: Is it a a form of expression or public anarchy and nuisance?

In a growing city like Galway we have ever more graffitti on our walls, parks and often on windows... Who are the artists and, like most other modern cities in the world, do we need a place for this form of modern art to be expressed? Maybe some of our walls should be cleared white for new graffitti artists to make their mark?

Firstly, it is important to note the difference between graffitti art and what is known as 'tagging' which is essentially a way of leaving one's mark, nickname or 'trag' by spray painting it on any and every available surface. This has been likened to dogs marking their territory, and has no real artistic or creative value, nor makes any statements of note. It is often also very detrimental to the appearance of a town or city. Here in Galway for example, one lone tagger did untold damage to businesses in the city centre when they tagged various buildings using a form of liquid acid. This can take up to 20mins to show on a building or window, and when used on glass there is no way to repair the damage short of replacing it. It is behaviour like this that makes people unkind towards the idea of graffitti, but when used as a form of expression, and in agreed areas, it can have a meaningful and beautiful impact on the viewer and the surroundings.

Ireland has a long, albeit little known history for graffitti art. In the North, both Unionst and Republican graffitti was used as a means to communicate from the underworld, to air politcal views, hopes and grievances. The communities then could freely talk and express the underlining feelings of their people on the ground. The things featured in many of these pieces often spoke a truth not realised until later, from when problems of the 70’s first came to light and also in the run-up to the peace process of the 90’s. Around the marching season people still look to the graffitti lining the roads as an indicator of public sentiment.

So what about Galway? Previously we had boards at City Hall which were open to use for graffitti and it was great to let this form of art to be expressed. However this is no longer in place and to my knowledge there is now no public space in Galway that is used for this purpose. There is some space around the playground on Father Griffin Road that has been set aside for murals and graffitti art, this is well laid out, but almost full, and we could use more of the same.

So what have cities like London , Barcelona and New York done in this situation? Well they realise that graffitti is part and parcel of modern living. In New York it is zero tolerance other than on designated areas. London and Barcelona are somewhat more lenient than NYC, but do try to restrict graffitti artists to predetermined areas. Available space for graf artists to work in goes a long way towards making it more acceptable, although the draw of the forbidden is temptation to both taggers and legitimate graffiti artists.

Galway is growing with more houses and developments every week; the city is expanding in every direction. We should question in a case like this whether amenities are being put in place to help groups like graf artists perform to their utmost potential. It is a case of asking the planners of our city to think in the future… like where will Galway be in 5 or 10 years time. Have we given enough thought to the social consequences of not providing space for these people? We call on our youth to express themselves in life, to find themselves, to be themselves. Where in Galway do we give them the forum for this in graffitti? Oscar Wilde once said: “Youth is the King”. Maybe our ever growing cosmopolitian multicultural city needs a Graff wall! For starters...

When one mentions the Hickey family name – great art literally springs to mind. Joby is the son of renowned painter, etcher, lithographic artist, architect and designer, Patrick Hickey. Joby’s father had founded the Graphic Studio Dublin in 1961, and his characteristic painting technique developed out of his printmaking methods.

Stylistically he couldn’t be more far removed from his father’s work. Joby’s work is thoroughly unique and his subject matter has captured the zeitgeist of a generation. His artwork is the painterly equivalent of the major cultural changes, which this country has experienced over the last ten years. His cityscapes and car paintings are evocations of life and at times the isolation of big city dwellers. They reveal a superb execution, masterly effects of light and shade, and a wonderfully exciting colouristic quality, which is derived from the artist’s study of the scenes around him. His paintings are distilled into memorable pictorial symbols, at times iconic, at time bordering on the legendary. His mastery of craft is the way in which Hickey is able to simplify his compositions and waive all merely anecdotal detail. What speaks to us is his empathy for the fate of the normal, common person with life in a mass society. Adopted as a baby his parents separated when he was just a child. He spent the early years of his life in Greece with his mother. Yet his plethora of childhood memories is of his father’s studio, of oil paints and his father’s printing press. He picked up art at an early age doing innumerable sketches. Though he completed his formal education at the National College of Art and Design, Hickey at times found art college a bit too contrived. His real artistic education came from his father who taught and encouraged him for most his life. Patrick Hickey was himself the Head of Painting in the Fine Art Faculty at the National College of Art and Design from 1986 – 1990.

Joby Hickey belongs to our generation who witnessed “man on the moon”. Many say it was man’s greatest achievement of our generation. In reviewing the film footage from that time it is almost impossible to distinguish in Hickey’s representation what is in fact canvas could actually be a still from film footage. It is this dichotomy between painting and film which underlies Hickey’s representation of the world around him, and in eschewing banal cliché of overworked realism, this remains Hickey’s recipe for success making Joby’s work accessible for decades to come.

Kew’s work is a wonderful mix of old Masters techniques, mythological motifs and pure fantasy. In fact Kew has an imagination unrestrained by reality where nudes in elaborate headdress, centaurs, gods and goddesses meander amidst vast landscapes full of forests and waterfalls.

There is a powerful religious theme running through Kew’s work. Quite a number of paintings feature elderly ecclesial figures dressed in their finest garments of opulent reds and blues while the female stands there in her nakedness. There is role reversal involved as the priests are hidden in shadow and she is accentuated by artificial, almost subterranean lighting effects, standing out against a nocturnal background (this calls to mind techniques explored by Caravaggio). The nude is powerless, pure and innocent under their condemning eyes, we are dubious and sceptical of the priests and can’t help but wonder what are they doing there half hidden under the cloak of darkness.

Artist of the Month - Philip Gray

Philip Gray was born in Cork and lived here until he turned six, then his parents, Albert and Wendy decided to move to Dublin for a few years. Without doubt his passion for the sea can be traced back to his childhood in Cork. He inherited his creative and adventurous spirit from his mother’s side of the family, a lineage that very fittingly nurtured both sailors and artists. Among his siblings there is a graphic designer and an interior designer, so creativity is certainly in the blood.

By his very nature, he is an opportunist, so he was determined to test the possibilities and the potential of his art in the marketplace. His vision was to use his art to develop a print collection thereby allowing him to further pursue his desire to become a full-time artist and at the same time secure the source through which he could channel his work.

Mark, no stranger to travel has worked in the art work to show, educate and give a voice to the poor as an artist. He is not afraid to get down and dirty, after his love of the arts his second love is one for boats and building the much loved currach. He has worked with the underprivileged in places like Bolivia, Korea, and Morocco as well Tasmania. Redden has a great love of the environment and “waste not want not” attitude often one will see with Marks canvas that they have been stitched by hand to waste not a piece of canvas. This give a great feel with the tick brush strokes to put life back into the raw canvas. An Art Degree student of the Crawford gallery in Cork and the only Contempory Irish artist to have received awards in boat building.

Campbell uses lots of different mediums in his art from cappuccino with charcoal to oil on canvas, he is inspired by the circus and its many different dimensions. He always questions life and the consumer rat race; his works will make you smile and brings out the naive child in us all. It also is thought provoking; it is ever changing with its bold colours. Campbell’s work is very recognizable because he has a very independent style. As a child Tom ambition was to be a pilot, but as he wears glasses, that was not to be. Now an artist by nature his passion is art in all its colour and glory. Campbell’s work is different and very interesting.

Classically trained artist, NCAD graduate, Chara Nagle has been acclaimed as one of Ireland's greatest new talents. She was born to paint. Her style is Modern Romantic, bold and dramatic. Her witty, glamorous larger than life approach, mixed with her highly perceptive skills and her observation of people are portrayed in a unique and passionate way across all of her work. Think of artists Caravaggio (c1596-c1599) and Delacroix (c15 - c15) fused with Agent Provocateur!

Coming full circle Chara has accumulated her life experiences to commit and dedicate her time to her lifelong passion of painting. An unprecedented demand has evolved for Chara's paintings since her sell out exhibition Moments last year. Chara is currently working towards her next exhibition, Moments II.

Modern life is an important subject matter for Chara. The essence of Chara's work reflect a deep understanding of a moment in time. She wishes to create an art which represents the time we live in. Her belief in the importance of the individual and individual experience is central to Chara's art. Whether it is the photographer in On Location earnestly holding onto her hat in the wind or the lovable rogue who has just opened a bottle of champagne, Chara has spotted it and painted it.

There is consistently an element of intrigue and humour in her work. Her paintings capture the moment but do not give it all away. This is for the viewer to figure out: decide, question, wonder... The fact that Chara's style is so life like, mixed with a vibrant use of colour and the conviction to paint textures so convincingly seem to almost cast a spell of wonder and question on the viewer.

New Arrival - Elena Mikhailova

Elena Mikhailova, a Russian born artist, has developed a distinctive style over the years. The viewer is enticed by the mood created with the combination of a blue green palette and vertical movements of the brush reminiscing of sentimental rainy days. Some may criticize that her paintings are cold and damp but she includes an extreme contrast of the light against the dark, an influence by the Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt, which allows her paintings to escape the mood of dark and drizzly.

At A Gallop

Thick oil paint on canvas depicts her diverse subject matter of romantic street scenes, spirited horses, and portraits with startling character. “Thick as butter” is often quoted to Jack B. Yeats paintings and you can see the flavor of this in Elena’s bold use of paint that creates a thick texture and looseness that allows the viewer to roam about freely without the restraint of ridged lines. This thickness creates a depth in her paintings that forces a viewer to search through them rather than just sweeping past.

Artist of the Month - Annie West

Annie West was born in Glasgow in 1961. She graduated from Dun Laoghaire College of Art & Design in 1979 with a Diploma in Design for Communications, and as a recipient of the Alfred Beit, Nora McGuinness and NCEA Patent Practicioners Awards she embarked on her career as a Design Assistant in RTÉ (Irish National Television) where she worked on a variety of children's programs, drama series and talk shows. This was followed by a decade working in feature films in Ireland, Britain and America, as well as working on the development of artwork for music CDs for many bands including among others, The Waterboys, Sharon Shannon and Matt Molloy.

During this time Annie has also secured commissions for book illustrations from publishers such as Folens, Mentor Books and Coiscéim, which formed the foundation of her interest in children's literature.

Annie has over a dozen children's books published both here (in Ireland), and in the UK and America. She has recently completed work on a series of illustrations for Children's BBC and has a number of books in development.

She specializes in highly detailed line and ink drawings with the emphasis on detail. She is particular and punctual, and can work to extremely tight deadlines. Most of her work is commissioned and operated by email, helping her to speed up the process of finished artwork.

Annie exhibits every year in Dublin and Sligo. She illustrates figures from history, literature and science with mischief in mind. She also works to commission and originals can be found in the collections of film stars, children, firefighters and rugby internationals.

In her spare time Annie coaches Under 8`s Rugby.

Annie is a member of the Illustrator`s Guild of Ireland, The Association of Illustrators (UK) and the American Society of Illustrators.

Lisa Keegan is based the Midlands and has been painting for the last 5 years. Her style has evolved over the past year and much of her work can be best described as Pop Art.
Her work is steadily gaining popularity in the Irish art market and her latest paintings can be found in a number of galleries around Ireland.

Her subject matter is reminiscent of Pop Art, including everyday materials and branded products. Pop Art is a style of art which explores the everyday imagery that is so much a part of contemporary consumer culture. Her paintings often depict icons from popular culture. Lisa also has an interest in representing nostalgic objects, drawing humor and a sense of familiarity that makes people smile.

‘I find my sources in everyday things and in colours and shapes that I think will bring pleasure to a viewer. I paint subjects that I feel will strike a chord with people, whether this is through evoking memories or just providing some humour through everyday objects’

Annie West is best known for her illustration of children books and helped out in the curit festival in Galway. She is excellent at depicting the WB Yeats in this new and very exciting exhibition “Yeats on a train”.
She was born in Glasgow to Sligo parents and moved to Ireland at the age of three. She went to school in Clane Co. Kildare and Alexandra College Dublin, followed by five years at Dun Laoghaire School of Art & Design where she graduated in 1979 with a Diploma in Design for Communications, as well as the Alfred Beit award (twice), the Nora McGuinness Award and the NCEA Patent Practicioners Award. She worked firstly in Words & Pictures, a division of the Wilson Hartnell Advertising & Marketing group, and then moved to RTE where she worked in the Design Department. She continued her Television career in Tyne Tees Television before going freelance where she worked in the Art department on TV Shows, Feature Films and pop promos: she has worked on two Neil Jordan films, as well as Irish classics such as “Hear My Song” and “Eat the Peach”. A must see at bold art gallery for the 31st art festival Galway 2008.

Opening by Sharon Shannon, Irish Musician, on Tuesday 15th July 2008 in Bold Art Gallery. Exhibition will runs until 31st July.

Conor McGuire was born in the west of Ireland and has chosen to live there as his influences are taken from the local rural landscape and townscape. His technique can vary from realism to abstract depending on the subject, but he finds his artistic home to be in an impressionistic impasto technique. He loves the quality and light in the west of Ireland and the shifting transience it brings to the subject matter. He likes subjects that are timeless and speak to the viewer without requiring them to be political or analytical. To his viewer Conor hopes they get some sense of the quirky essence that makes the west of Ireland life so special…..a sense of the timelessness of the place, its friendliness and beauty.

Phillip Morrison's work generally concentrates on streetscapes and surf scenes from the west of Ireland. Strong shapes and colour are key signatures of his work which help to create interesting compositions and create a sense of movement. Another unique feature would be his treatment of the sky: often the sky in a painting has no physical relationship with the landscape below it. In his work he tries to bridge this by forcing a relationship between the two by use of lines that interweave between them. He finds that this gives a visual tempo to the piece.

Graffitti

“Graffitti is it a a form of expression or a public annaricy nuisance”…In a growing city like Galway we have more graffitti on our wall, park and often on windows... Who are the artists and do we need like most other modern citys in the world, a place for this form of modern art to be expressed? May be a wall that can be cleared white for the new gaffitti to be formed .
In the north on both sides of the equasion being unionest and republican graffitti was the used as a the means to communicate from the under world. The communitys could talk and express the under lining feelings of their people on the ground, often the news came from this is defently true when the largers problems of the 70’s came to light and also in to play upto pease process in the the 90’s. Still people look to the graffitti of the falls roads, around the marching season to see how the communitys are feeling... so not all graffitti is with out mearitt or meaning.
A few years ago we had boards at city hall that were used for graffitti and it was great to let this form of art to be expressed. After the exercise their board were moved and as I know there is no public space in galway that is used for this purpose.There is some space around the playground (Beside Yeats collae??) that has well designed for public murals, this is wonderfull and the city could use more of the same.
There is another form of graffitti called ”tagging”. This is when a person used a name or a nick name or trag and they mostly spray it on walls, bins, lamposts. It is a bit like a dog pissing againts a fence, to make his mark. This is all over the city, intack some of the taggers use a liquid acid on windows, this can take 20 minutes to come up on the glass. In the past year a lone tagger did untold dammage to shop windows in the center of Galway city, all this glass had to be replaced as this acid can not be removed . This as one can imagin is detrimental to business and is a large public nusance in our city. We also have the tagger that puts his tag on ever surface imagable, just look around the wall and post boxes all over the city.
When it comes to law and order , do we sit back and tolerate theres “Dogs” pisssing or should we have stronger laws for this... Often the ofender acting alone and is under 16 do what is the law to do. It is a case that they will grow out of it or mature in to young artist or is it a case that the law should have other deterance to reform these public offerders. These are questions that we will beforce to get our politions to answer, or we will be called the “city of the tag” befour long.
What have citys like London , Barcelona, New york done with this? Well graffitti is part and parcel of moderen living. In new york it is zero tolerance other than on areas that are designated.That is what it sounds like, prison, if you don’t obey the law. London and barcelona have the same problem that we have, they do have designate graffitti areas for this and it deffently helps.
Galway is growing with more houses and developments every week the city is growing in every direction. Is it a question that are all amenitys being put in place to help there new communitys group to their utmost potential. It is a case of looking to the planners of our city to think in the future… like where will Galway be in 5 years time or 10 years. Have we given enough time to think of social consequence of not enough amenities for these community! Be it a graffitti wall or a sports centers ( that is equiped and staffed).
We call on our youth to express themselves in life, to find themselves, to be themselves. Where in Galway do we give them the forum for this in graffitti? Oscar wild once said “Youth is the King”. May be our ever growing cosmopolitian multicultural city needs a G wall! For starters.

Jimmy Kelly first love was writing and his painting was something he just dabbled in occasionally but in the last five years the painting has taken over and has been a consuming passion which doesn’t look like abating. The art he paints he would describe as romantic expressionism, as he loves romantic themes, a balloon seller on a busy street, a women walking with an umbrella etc. these types of themes inspire him. Expressionism is the term that probably suits the application of paint the best. Jimmy says no one is ever going to look at one of his paintings and admire the fine detail as for him the thought and the physical activity of painting are totally inter-related.

The Long Walk

My work generally concentrates on streetscapes and surf scenes from the west of Ireland. Strong shapes and colour are key signatures of my work which help to create interesting compositions and create a sense of movement. Dympna Bonfield is an Irish artist who exhibits work both nationally and internationally. After spending many years living and working in Dublin she returned west, to her native County Clare. Much of her recent work can be seen to reflect this move, as her work has drawn much inspiration from the surrounding landscape which has resulted in a new found freedom of expression that reflects the essential character and culture of the west of Ireland.

Sacred Space

From an early age Dympna was interested in drawing and painting as she painted regularly, and with little or no formal training is still mainly self taught. Her career began as a primary school teacher and her interest in art later influenced her to attend the National College of Art in Dublin where she qualified as an art teacher. This led her to teach art in secondary schools and much of her early work during this time took the form of murals which were painted in some of the schools and colleges in which she worked and which can still be seen today. Whilst teaching and living in Dublin she began exhibiting work in one or two of the Dublin galleries.

Cliffs of Moher

Some years ago Dympna's career took a new direction when she undertook further training - this time in Goldsmiths College at London University where she qualified as an art psychotherapist. She has since designed and facilitated a course for psychotherapists enabling them to use art in their work with adults and children. These courses are now being run in various centres in Ireland.

Gavin Collins was born in Cape town, South Africa, the son of a farmer and artist. Living on farms all his life, Gavin showed no interest in academic subject but spend his days working with his hands, drawing and painting. When his talents for art became apparent at the age of, his parents supported him and at allowed him to leave school and attend the Ruth Prowse school of art.

Gavin studied Graphic design but never give up his love for painting in oils. Gavin is continually influenced by the master of the past as he receives great enjoyment from studying their styles and techniques. Gavin had his first exhibition at the age of 14.

Life in the township

As a young man, Gavin experimented with various styles applying some of his graphic design knowledge to his paintings using pleasing pastel colours thinned to create an almost water colour effect, a style that was most successful.

William Watson, William Watson was born in 1975 and currently lives and teaches in Kilkenny. He studied Art and design and achieved a diploma in fine art at NCAD (Dublin).

The artist paints mainly with acrylic on canvas, primed with warm tones, building up the composition with layers of small brushstrokes. This building up of punctuated colour has the overall aim of producing intense and vibrant tones, dramatically increasing the freshness and temperature of the painting.

Watson says of Connemara and her people; 'My paintings are a testament to these special people, their land and the sea about them.'

Commissions include Springhill Court Hotel, Durrow Castle Hotel and Duiske Abbey as well as many private pieces.

The artist's first solo exhibition was at Kilkenny's arts festival in 2005.

Tony Kew was born in South Africa in 1937 but is also an Irish citizen. After living in Toronto, Canada for a number of years he finally settled in Ireland. He celebrates his three score and tenth birthday (70yrs) with an exhibition in Bold Art Gallery entitled “This & That”.

It is difficult to define Kew’s work as there are lots of different influences coming into play such as mythology, religion, classics, symbolism, and fantasy. His work has a strong figurative style highly influenced by artists such as Caravaggio and Van Dyck.

“I am a painter who sees and therefore paints in a realistic way. I am sometimes perturbed by the interpretations I see of the female form, especially as they are so called “portraits”.

Susan Stairs, a respected Art Historian and author of many books on Irish Art, has written of Walsh: “A feel for the spiritual nature of his subjects is obvious; he manages to instil in his paintings a distinctly reverential atmosphere. This, combined with an inherent ability to use colour in an almost sacred fashion, results in some of the most significantly romantic work since that of Jack B. Yeats”. The dramatic impact of his work is reminiscent of Roderick O’ Connor, Jack Yeats and Francis Bacon.

Helen Timon is an artist whose work follows a great tradition, the tradition of skill and technical excellence which she applies to all of her work.

In recent years she has become one of Galway’s more successful artists. Not a household name perhaps, but a painter and with a large and loyal following. Her love for painting has resulted in a vast body of work which has found its way into public and private collections in many parts of the world.

Helen’s creative vision has led her to travel to many parts in search of inspiration. Her avid interest in photography over the past decade has been almost a tool of her trade and a constant source of inspiration.
Her dedication to observing nature is displayed in the way she approaches her abstracts, still life’s and landscapes.

Over the past twenty years Vincent Killowry’s reputation in fine art and design has steadily grown. He was winner of the An Post 2005 Stamp of the Year Competition with his Tall Ships which celebrated the commencement of the Tall Ships Race from Waterford in July 2005. These stunning stamps, designed by Vincent, received the largest number of votes from collectors.

As an artist who specialises in painting the great machines of land, sea and air he has always been intrigued by mankind’s ability to harness the power of Mother Nature to travel great distances.

Although Vincent’s acrylics and oils are painted with a technical accuracy reflecting his interest in the engineering aspect of his subject, he considers the lighting, atmosphere, mood and setting of the composition to share equal importance within the painting.
